TypeLove Type Specimen Poster Featuring "The Goonies"
Specs : 24" w, 36" h
For this project My class and I were tasked with picking two complementary typeface families and creating a balanced poster showing the two typefaces next to each other. The goal of the project was to create a balanced poster that showed off each typeface equally and within the perimeters that were given to us by our individually assigned art directors. For my poster my assigned art director gave be the theme of 80's movie posters, so naturally I chose "The Goonies", a favourite childhood movie of mine.
With my given theme my first plan of action was to research. I researched and looked at 80's movie posters to understand the atheistic and vibe my art director wanted me to achieve. I saw a lot of simple 3 to 5 coloured colour pallets. Bright colours next to dull colours, tide in with the contrasting black and white to make an appealing yet balanced look.
My approach began with me picking a 80's movie to base my poster around. As stated in my first paragraph I chose "The Goonies", an amazing movie that I still love to this day. Once I had that figured out I then decided on my two complementary Typefaces, Madrone ( my decretive typeface) and Rokkit ( my body Typeface ) to complement. I wanted the typefaces to resemble that of a pirates treasure map, or that of something typed with a type writer.
It was tricky balancing the two typefaces as I soon found out that unlike Rokkit that has so many different options, Madrone only had one. But in the end I believe I did a rather fine job.
